The Great Siege of 1778

When Daniel Boone escaped captivity with the Shawnee Indians in 1778 he headed immediately for Fort Boonesborough. He had overheard talk that Chief Blackfish intended to capture the fort. Knowing that it was not prepared for battle, Boone traveled over 160 miles in 4 days to warn the fort. Although Boone tried to negotiate with Blackfish and his warriors the battle erupted. The Siege lasted for over 10 days. The force of over 300 Indians and their British allies tried to tunnel to the fort, shot it with burning arrows and attacked outright with musket fire. On the 11th day the rains came. When the settlers looked out in the morning the Indians had quietly slipped away in the night.
