Fort Massac has a long and varied history. The first fort was built in 1757 during the French & Indian War. George Rogers Clark visited the fort in 1778. The fort was destroyed and rebuilt under orders from George Washington in 1794. It was damaged in the earthquake of 1812 but repaired and continued to operate during the War of 1812. It was decommissioned in 1814 after the War of 1812.
