The Many Faces of the Locust Grove Fall Encampment

The Tactical Battle at Locust Grove 2021

The Locust Grove Fall event was a much scaled down event in 2021. The large Market Fair that usually takes place on this October weekend took a one year hiatus as construction continues at the site. The event mirrored troops going into winter quarters. In the 18th Century troops did not fight during the winter. Late October to some time in April the troops stayed in winter quarters. Camped - sometimes with families in tow - they rested, regained their strength, repaired weapons and uniforms. This was similar to what George Washington's troops did over their winter at Valley Forge. In this case the American Colonials and the British regulars, along with the Canadian Butler's Rangers (green Uniforms) and the German mercenaries were settling in for the winter but happened upon each other while out foraging for food.

Camp Life

Whiskey making in the distillery

Visitors were able to visit the distillery where the corn crop from Locust Grove was turned into whiskey in the late 18th and early 19th century.

Children learned the process of becoming a soldier.

Both visitors and re-enactor children could sign up to become a soldier. By signing their name or making their mark (as many 18th century folk could not read or write) pledging their loyalty they were then issued a musket.

Music at Locust Grove

Throughout the weekend visitors were treated to musical selections at various times and places throughout the grounds.

Thanks to the folks at Historic Locust Grove for access to the grounds and the ability to photograph the event. Join in next October as the larger marker fair returns with more re-enactors, more vendors and on site parking.
