Mary Patton

Mary Patton was a frontier woman who also made black powder. Patton came from England and her father who came from Scotland taught her the skill. After she married John Patton they moved to the Watauga settlement where they built a powder mill. They were lucky where they found themselves because there were nearby caves to supply the necessary elements needed for black powder. Mary Patton broke the mold when it came to what people expected from an 18th century woman.
