Jug Band Music

Louisville is known as the home of Jug Band Music and holds the Jug Band Jubilee each year. Jug band music was first recorded here in the 1920's. The music is a combination of blues, ragtime and jazz but includes any music in which a jug is played. Springing up in the urban south (Louisville and Memphis) homemade instruments were the basis of the groups. The National Jug Band Jubilee brought together bands from across the country to participate. The afternoon also included a workshop session in which the visiting public could try their hands at a variety of instruments. Enjoy the photos of some of the bands that performed.
