Voyageurs on the Oubache River

Fort Ouiatenon

Ouiatenon was a French outpost established in 1717 and was well established by 1761 as a trading post in the French Territory that is now Indiana. Voyageurs involved in the fur trade stopped through on their way to Montreal. When George Rogers Clark and the Virginians came through the area the French stayed. Unlike the English/Americans the French lived in harmony with the native Ouia people. Eventually though, the French tired of the Americans with their constant push for land and their continuing warring with the English and their native allies. By 1791 the Fort was eventually burned to the ground by the Americans. The history of the area was rekindled in the 1960's and this year marked the 55th Annual Feast of the Hunters' Moon hosted by the Tippecanoe  County Historical Society along with the Tippecanoe County Parks And recreation Department and Visit Lafayette West Lafayette.

The reconstructed fort and the grounds were home to numerous visitors, demonstrators, food vendors and more.
There were various stages and venues for military displays and tacticals, musicians, camps and by the river was the Voyageurs camp.
