at Historic Locust Grove
October 28, 2018

Photos by Kathy Cummings

Sunday was a brisk fall day for re-enactors and visitors an the Annual Market Fair. Troops marched, vendors hawked their wares and visitors shopped. Silas, the rat catcher entertained children with his stories and even presented them with miniature rubber rats!

On the battle field the Battle of Monmouth that took place in June of 1778 was relived behind the historic house. George Washington ordered his second in command, General Charles Lee, to attack the British forces. Lee launches a disordered assault and later retreats, to Washington’s dismay. Lee is later challenged to a duel by John Laurens to reckon for Lee’s insulting words against Washington.
