Each year over 700,000 people gather along the riverfront in Louisville, Kentucky for Thunder Over Louisville a kickoff event for the Kentucky Derby. But high above the river, on a secluded hillside another event is taking place. It is 18th Century Thunder at Historic Locust Grove. Here a dedicated group from The Illinois Regiment encamp outside the home of William and Lucy Clark Croghan. Instead of fireworks and an air show like down on the river, visitors here, are treated to the sound of musket fire and drums.

Famed soldier George Rogers Clark spent his final days living at Locust Grove, under the care of his sister. Re-enactors portraying members of his unit - The Illinois Regiment take this weekend to camp on the grounds and give visitors a taste of life in the 18th century.

Although the term “camp followers” has a rather derogatory connotation today it was a standard acceptable way of life for an 18th century soldier’s wife. And the army needed them too. Chores such as cooking, sewing and laundry were performed by women attached to the army.

Visitors listen intently to an explanation of the work involved in doing laundry in the 18th century and Carol Jarboe answered all their questions.

If you can make your mark - you can become a soldier.....
