On the Farm 1862

Perryville, KY  2006

Photos by Jim & Kathy Cummings

The Battle of Perryville, which was the largest Civil War battle in the Commonwealth, killed and wounded more than 7,500 Union and Confederate troops. The land where the State Historic Site is now located was originally the farm of Henry Bottom. It was Bottom who later buried thousands of Confederate soldiers on this land.

But this weekend was a peaceful site as re-enactors portrayed the farm as it would have been. The townfolk of Perryville camped at the site to help Farmer Bottom fell trees and build split rail fences. Re-enactors came from as far away as Ohio and Wisconsin to help with the project.
