Veteran’s Day is back on the map in Louisville, KY. After a long absence due to budget issues the parade returned in 2011. Mayor Greg Fisher took the step to bring the parade back with urging from many Veterans, including his father who walked in the parade with him. Coordinated by Wayne Hettinger, who manages the city’s Thunder over Louisville Derby Celebration, today’s parade was filled with military units, civic groups and many Veteran’s groups dedicated to the health and well being of today’s returning veteran’s.

A pleasant surprise was the presence of over 1400 Jefferson County School students and teachers invited to participated. They walked the parade route and gathered in front of the stage to hear the guest speakers.

On the dais were special guests Heather French Henry - Commissioner of Kentucky's Department of Veterans Affairs, Congressman John Yarmuth, and Kentucky National Guard Adjutant Major General Edward W. Tonini. Other guests were Medal of Honor Winners - Hershel W. Williams, Medal of Honor Recipient; WWII, Ernest West, Medial of Honor Recipient; Korean Conflict, Don Jenkins, Medal of Honor Recipient; Vietnam War.

After the speeches, awards, flag ceremonies and more the city followed with a dedication of a new Vietnam Memorial on the riverfront held at 2 pm the same afternoon.
