May 4th, 2008

By Kathy Cummings

With a cast of characters to rival Walt Disney the 40th Annual Kentucky Colonels Bar-B-Que took place on May 4, 2008. The Kentucky Colonels are a non-profit charitable organization with a long Kentucky tradition. Henry Clay, George Rogers Clark, Abraham Lincoln and more wandered the grounds of the event.

Billed as the “First Last Colonels’ Reunion BBQ” the title reflected the lower attendance of recent years. In it’s heyday The Colonels’ BBQ was a must attend event for derby goers. Now with so many events in the weeks proceeding the Derby - the BBQ has felt the pinch. Whether or not the event will continue will be a decision made after the numbers from 2008 are in.

But no one at this years event let the name stop the fun. The mint juleps were superb, the food excellent and the special Kentucky Burgoo tent was doing a brisk trade. Music was by the Monarchs and a cast of historic figures roamed the grounds at the St. Joseph Childrens Home in Louisville, KY

The “Cast of Characters” included members of The Kentucky Humanities Council Chautaqua Programs and members of The Painted Stone Settlers, Shelbyville, Kentucky. Both groups have benefitted from The Kentucky Colonels Grant program in their efforts to bring Kentucky History to life. The Kentucky Historical Society also had the Historymobile on site with it’s new exhibit on Abraham Lincoln.
