18th Century Market Fair
at Historic Locust Grove

October 29, 2016

This was the 13th annual event for the 18th Century Market Fair. Although officials from Locust Grove announced a record breaking crowd, the number of re-enactors was less than in recent years. The weather cooperated with a beautiful fall day. But unlike the early years, there were not the great numbers of military units that once vied for a place in the camps and on the field. The host group - the Illinois regiment was active in the camps and on the field and their numbers seemed pretty much as usual. But gone were the units that use to travel from several states away. I can remember years when the number of different flags on the battle field captured my photographers eye as they unfurled and snapped in the wind. There was no parade of troops at the end of the battle.

But there were many familiar faces of re-enactors past and present - making for a fun event. The day was a pleasant one and hopefully as events ebb and flow this one will continue and some year soon bring back the large number of military groups that have always made this colorful fall event one of my favorites.
