In 1781 General George Rogers Clark and Colonel Archibald Lochry, who had been recruiting men near Wheeling, WV started down the Ohio on the return trip to Kentucky. When Lochry missed the appointed time to meet, Clark started down the Ohio only 12 hours before Lochry. The Indian, Joseph Brant planned to ambush this force on the Ohio. But the Indians refused to attack Clark on the Ohio for they were outnumbered and Clark had mounted a swivel gun on his boat. Instead they waited for Lochry’s force that was following Clark’s. When Lochry ordered his men to go ashore to cook some meat and to feed the horses, the ambush took place. Lochry was forced to surrender and was later killed.
