The Hot Air Balloon

The hot air balloon is the first successful human-carrying flight technology. The first untethered manned hot air balloon flight was performed by Jean-Franois Piltre de Rozier and Franois Laurent d'Arlandes on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers. The first hot-air balloon flown in the Americas was launched from the Walnut Street Jail in Philadelphia on January 9, 1793 by the French aeronaut Jean Pierre Blanchard.

At The Fair at New Boston the hot air balloons were being launched from the center of the fair to the delight of children and adults. Made of paper and ink they flew over the grounds just as the first balloons launched in Paris 200 years ago.

The Camera Obscura

Photos by Chelsea Fitzwater

The camera obscura was discovered over 200 years ago. Also known as the “pinhole camera” it uses a reflective lens to show a large view on a screen or cloth. Stepping inside the “Grand Camera Obscure” tent at the fair showed an amazing circular view of the fair. Note the feet in the bottom photo, those are the viewers standing around the screen in the semi darkness seeing the large reflection of the fair grounds outside the tent.

The Resurrectionists

New to the fair this year were the resurrectionists. Often mistaken for “graverobbers” the Resurrectionists dug up graves for the surgeons who paid top dollar for cadavers to experiment on. Without these little known historical figures modern medicine may not have evolved as quickly as it did.
