The Raid and Settlement of Fort Harrod

Photos by Jim & Kathy Cummings

As a group of settlers are doing their chores outside the stockade walls of Fort Harrod, a lone Indian sneaks up on the distracted settlers. When he is spotted the settlers run screaming inside the fort walls. The lone Indian retreats back to his camp and returns with a small party to negotiate with the settlers. George Rogers Clark, James Harrod and William Pogue come out to talk with the natives as Pogue’s wife, the famed Ann McGinty, watches from the wall with a host of pioneers. But negotiations fail, the men return to the fort and the raid is on.
