The 2008 Grassy Run Rendezvous was dedicated to the memory of Army Staff Sgt. Matt Maupin.

In addition to the weekend being the Grassy Run Rrendezvous only about 15 miles away in the Union Civic Center crowds passed by Maupin’s casket. Maupin’s remains were discovered last month after four years in which he was the only American soldier in Iraq to be listed as missing in action. Maupin was buried on Sunday after a service at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark.

Time stood still for a few short moments at Grassy Run. Members of different eras and different cultures came together to pay tribute to a fallen member of today’s military. The local VFW began the short ceremony playing Taps, They were followed by a prayer from re-enactor Frank Jarboe better known as Parson John. The final tribute came from the White Oak Singers with a stirring rendition of Soldier Boy.

Children Welcome!

Grassy Run is also known as being very ”kid friendly”. During the annual rendezvous boy scouts are permitted to camp in an adjacent field. Children’s games and events abound and Friday was school day for local schools.

New on the agenda was a metal punch station for children. Preprinted patterns permitted children as young as 3 and 4 to create a design on tin as would have been done in the 18th century.
