The Wedding
at The Long Run Massacre 2004

Photos by Jim and Kathy Cummings

In researching Squire Boone’s Painted Stone Station, Karen Powell discovered that one of her ancestors had been married at The Painted Stone Station. This led to researching what an 18th century wedding would have been like and a new scenario was born.

On Saturday Kevin Raleigh portrayed the groom, Dan Poorman the preacher and Cassie Powell, the bride.

While the bride’s friends were moved - the grooms friends were more ready with a bottle.

The wedding took a comedic turn on Sunday as re-enactors discussed the lack of ‘men of the cloth’ on the frontier. With death by Indian attack daily on the horizon, engagements were short and couples often didn’t wait for the preacher to arrive. They married by common consent and had the ceremony performed the next time a preacher came through the area.

As an additional bit of improv Nathan Logsdon stepped in and objected to the marriage as a representative of the Crown. He finally agreed to permit the couple to wed if they promised to file all documents pertinent to King and Country as soon as the ceremony was over.
