To nominate a Re-Enactor of the Month

D.G. Montfort

by Jim Cummings

D.G. Montfort of Cincinnati is not only Re-Enactor of the Week he is The Painted Stone Settlers’ first Lifetime Member.

Don is a retired attorney and a great supporter of all re-enactors and re-enacting events. Dr. Harold Raleigh, president of The Painted Stone Settlers, told the crowd at The Long Run Massacre; “When we were forming The Painted Stone Settlers we went first to Don Montfort for advice. We told him what we wanted to do and what we hoped to accomplish.”

Don helped set up Painted Stone Settlers, Inc. and gave freely not only of himself, his knowledge and expertise in the law but also of his vast experience in both black powder shooting and re-enacting.

THE
 PRESENTATION

With Don’s help we started out light years ahead of where we otherwise would have been, said Raleigh.

Don first shot black powder in 1937and has been active in re-enacting since the 1950’s. He is an active member in The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.

Don admits his pace is a little slower today than 20 years ago. I asked Don what has changed since the ‘50’s in this hobby. “Not much - things are better organized today, and most of the bad things have changed, but the one thing that has not, are the people, the people are just great.”

Dr. Harold R. Raleigh, president

Don said he wished more people would get involved in both black powder shooting and re-enacting. “It’s a great hobby.” And Don encourages his two grandsons by bringing tham to events like The Long Run Massacre. Don has attended all five of The Long Run Massacre Re-Enactments and says he will keep coming as long as he is able.

Don and his son Guy still take treks along the Ohio and Kentucky rivers.

A true outdoorsman.

At The Painted Stone Festival you never see Don without the two grandsons he adores. I asked him if they ever get away from him. Don smiles and says; “ They can be a handful, but these little guys keep me young and on my toes.

Don Montfort is a special person and a true friend to re-eancting.
