View from The Big Four Bridge

Photos by Kathy Cummings

One of the pluses from our trip to the riverbank was a visit to the recently completed pedestrian walkway at the Big Four Bridge. The bridge was originally a railroad bridge built in 1888 that ceased operation in 1969. The cost to demolish the bridge was more than leaving the bridge. So in making room for other ramps and roadways the ramps to the bridge were removed while the bridge remained over the river. When we first moved to Louisville in the late 70’s we nicknamed it “the bridge that doesn’t go anywhere.” In the last few years of river front development the bridge got new ramps and was opened to pedestrians. This was our first chance to walk and photograph the bridge and the river below.
