In a continuing effort to bring Shelby County Kentucky’s history to the forefront, The Painted Stone Settlers invited Kentucky’s First Governor to speak at their monthly meeting on April 1st, 2010. Continuing with the theme, The Isaac Shelby Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution were also invited and opened the evening with a Presentation of Colors.

Isaac Shelby as portrayed by Mel Hankla, began his performance with the acceptance speech Shelby made when he accepted the nomination for a second term as governor. Having left public life after a long military career and a term as Kentucky’s first governor Shelby had led a quiet life as a farmer at his home - Traveler’s Rest near Danville, KY. But as this country was on the brink of war, Shelby agreed to run again for office and announced his candidacy in July of 1812 less than a month before the election. At the age of 62 he not only became governor again (Kentucky’s fifth) but a soldier as well, leading Kentucky troops in the Battle of the Thames in Canada.

There was well deserved applause for an outstanding performance by Hankla and then still plenty to do for the nearly full house.
