The Fair 2015
Photos by Kelly Cummings, Kurt Caulley and Kathy Cummings

A place of selling of livestock, entertainment, taverns, and persons of varying skills and sleight of hand... Smell the roasting turkey legs, the children selling fruits, the slackrope walker, the magicians and musicians all add to the flavor that is the fair.

Fairs originated in Merry Old England and may go back as far as the Roman Empire. It was a chance for all manner of persons to converge in one place. Fairs came to the colonies with the English. They were places for selling and merry making in an often otherwise hard life. Descriptions like the one below advertised the fairs...

“All Persons who will bring any Goods, Merchandizes, Cattle, or any Thing else to the said Fairs, or Markets, to sell, shall be free and exempt from the Payment of any Toll, Stallage, Piccage, or any other Charge, for the Term of Five Years next ensuing this last day of August..”
