Women on the frontier spent a good portion of their time making soap and cleaning clothes. At the Spring Encampment at Locust Grove there was an interesting display on washing clothes. Not only did the women participate but a young lady named Hannah gave us the full demonstration from the wash board and the lye soap to stirring the clothes in a kettle over the fire. Pioneer children were given tasks early on. The smooth running of these early households made work an almost constant necessity for the entire family.
