The Battle of Blue Licks at Blue Licks Battlefield State Park

For lovers of Kentucky and Revolutionary War history there is no greater story than the Battle of Blue Licks. Settlers and Indians met in a conflict that lasted only about 15 minutes but changed the lives of the Kentuckians forever. In this short battle over 80 prominent Kentuckians lost their lives and the Indians moved back across the Ohio River confident that they could regain the land known as Kentucke.

Each July women from all over the country descend on Historic Locust Grove for the Annual Jane Austen Festival. And despite record heat the crowd appeared to be just as large as ever.

Janeites as they are known, shop, learn, listen and stroll the grounds in all their finery. Unlike many period events that feature mostly men, in uniform or frontier clothing, these women have chosen a time period when fashion was all the rage.

Chief Black Hoof aka Rusty Cottrell was the planned speaker for the Boone Society’s Saturday night dinner.

The 4th Annual Gathering of Descendants took place on June 23, 2018 at Fort Boonesborugh State Park. The event is open to all but attracts visitors who have genealogical connections to the early fort settlers. This year the event was also a stop for The Boone Society’s bus load of visitors celebrating their bi-annual meeting in Lexington, Kentucky.

Tables were manned by area groups with information and books available on families and locations around the fort. We spoke with visitors from as far as Arizona and California who were interested in learning more about their genealogy. See more photos from the event ... coming soon.

2018 Oldham County Colonial Trade Faire

Charlie Scott and Eric McClain are members of both the Sons of the American Revolution, Isaac Shelby Chapter and also the Painted Stone Settlers. They were kept quite busy on Sunday with both the SAR Flag display and later setting off the Painted Stone Settlers 18th Century replica cannon.

The Colonial Trade Faire is held in Oldham County Kentucky in conjunction with the Arts on the Green, an art fair in LaGrange Kentucky.

What better way to display the history center including it’s new Dahlgren Pioneer Barn than on a weekend that already has thousands of folks in town for the art fair.

The Colonial Fair included authors and demonstrators. Learn more....

Maggie Delaney debuts new program at The Fort Boonesborough final Firreside Chat for 2018

Carole Jarboe has been performing her - Maggie Delaney-Indentured Servant for almost 10 years. Jarboe decided it was time to move on with Maggie’s story to life after indenture. The search this time led the Jarboe’s in a new direction with a program entitled Out of the Ground and Sold Away. The Jarboe’s were looking for a way that Maggie could make a living to enable her to pursue her dream of looking for her children that were indentured separately from their parents.

Ressurectionists were the answer and in a much lighter (but just as historically accurate) the tables are turned and Frank Jarboe becomes the down and out grumbling gravedigger, known as Ould Badger!! He is the leader of the Resurrectionists group and the fellow that found Maggie “wandering around, half outa me head and starving” when she returned to Philadelphia to try and find her two children. (He doesn’t talk real good, ‘cause he was in a fight where he got hit in the face with a shovel and it cut out a big bunch of his tongue!). Watch for listings of more performances as they are scheduled.

The Bucksnort Longhunters and The Ancestral Trails Historical Society co-hosted a show at The Pritchard Center in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Goods for longhunters and re-enactors in one room while across the hall there were books, art and tee shirts for genealogists and history buffs. Winter events keep the history alive and interest high in cold weather projects like genealogy, gun making and getting clothing and kit ready for the spring.

One Drop A Slave!

New Book Now Available

The end of 2017 found Graphic Enterprises/Pioneer Times hard at work on book design again.

Eddie Price author of Widder’s Landing completed his long awaited sequel entitled One Drop A Slave!

A frontier tale taking place in Kentucky in the early 1800s ,Price does an amazing job of mixing historic facts with his fictional characters.

From the lands of Craig Ridgeway’s Kentucky farm along the Ohio River to the bustling City of New Orleans and beyond Price examines slavery and those caught up in it’s clutches.

This is the second book designed for Price by Kathy Cummings editor of The Pioneer Times. The cover features a pen and ink drawing of steamboats by Kentucky artist John Ward.

The book is now at the publisher’s with plans for it to be available for readers at many of the winter trade fairs listed above.
