The Siege of Fort Randolph

Ft. Randolph

In 1774 over 1,000 Indians attacked troops at the Battle of Point Pleasant during Dunmore’s War. Captain Matthew Arbuckle under General Hand later erected a fort here. Cornstalk who had led the Indians in 1774 returned in 1777 on a mission of peace, to warn the troops, his nation was bent on war.

The militia worried about their rum rations while others went outside the fort walls to work on the crops.

Young men attended to their duties including drilling and standing guard.

Cornstalk who had in 1774 had been an enemy of the fort, now comes in peace to try and negotiate a settlement but is instead killed by some hotheaded young men.

Word comes that avenging Indians have attacked the settlers working in the fields.

The militia answers the call - but are soon pushed back by the Indians.

A hastily filled canteen and water brought to the fighting men help as the siege drags on for days.

Fort Randolph withstands the Siege but is later burned to the ground.
