Ft. Randolph

In 1774 over 1,000 Indians attacked troops at the Battle of Point Pleasant during Dunmore’s War. Captain Matthew Arbuckle under General Hand later erected a fort here. Cornstalk who had led the Indians in 1774 returned in 1777 on a mission of peace, to warn the troops, his nation was bent on war.

Cornstalk’s presence at the fort was intended to promote peace. When a soldier outside the fort was killed, angry soldiers blamed Cornstalk and murdered him, and his son and companions. The Shawnees prepared for war as did the inhabitants of Fort Randolph.

Nonhelema, Cornstalk’s sister returns to the fort under a flag of peace. Despite the deaths in her family, she helps disguise two men of the fort and sends them off to warn other settlers.
