The first recruits for the Lewis and Clark Expedition first met William Clark at his brother’s cabin in Clarksville, IN. General George Rogers Clark had first been approached by Thomas Jefferson about the expedition years earlier. But due to age and failing health it was his younger brother “Billy” who made the famous trip. Although the expedition officially started from St. Louis, Missouri in 1803 the Kentuckians began their trip from Clark’s Point. In returning they also officially returned to St. Louis. William Clark and Merriweather Lewis then returned to Louisville in 1806 to celebrate their homecoming with the Clark family. They stopped at Clark’s Point and Locust Grove the home of Clark’s sister and brother in-law Lucy Clark Croghan and William Croghan.
