Another good crowd gathered at Fort Boonesborough State Park for the 2nd of the four February Fireside Chats. This week’s performer was Ernie Kurtz. Unlike the other chats which bring figures from history to perform in a “first person” narrative, Ernie is a musician that appears “as himself.” His music is all from the 18th century and is lively and entertaining. Interspersed with his music are stories and explanations of the 18th century life.
Tales of soldiers and sailors and loves lost turn back the clock. His performance is friendly and engaging and he encourages the crowd to sing along. I could see feet tapping and hands clapping in time to the music. Especially fun were the songs in which he had parts for the audience. And although the songs were unfamiliar to many, their storytelling quality quickly caught the attention of the audience.
It was hard to believe that the temperature outside hovered in the teens on this particular Saturday night. For the blockhouse was warm and the night’s menu included a “white chili” made by Foundation members Jackie and Larry Ginter and also a venison chili made by Kristi Heasley for those with more 18th century tastes.
For the second time the tavern was open with games, hot cider and additional music performed by Jon Hagee.
