The Best Photos of 2012

Looking Back at 2012

By Kathy Cummings

Choosing photos for the best of is never an easy task. We take thousands of photos each year. The photos above try to encompass three things. 1. At least one photo from all of the events we attended this year. 2. Historically accurate - to the degree that the event is. (That means no coke cans or automobiles in the shot.) 3. Participants who are “in the moment” - fully engrossed in both the time period and the activity they are pursuing.

This year of 2012 saw a few new and different events. Weather - namely extreme heat caused us to skip a few early spring events. The Shelby County Historical Society’s History Camp was a highlight of our photographic year. Not a “period event” just kids learning history and enjoying every minute of it. Another non period event was the 2012 Veteran’s Day Parade in Louisville, KY. Certainly a different type event for us - it did give us an opportunity to capture some WW II images, including one of our personal favorites retired Iraq War Marine Dog - Sgt. Beyco.

Although we shoot a lot less 19th Century Civil War than 18th Century events, the 150th Commemoration of the Battle of Perryville was another highlight of the year. The mere fact that there were almost 2,000 registered re-enactors made it a challenge. The fact that we chose to attend the sunrise battle was another. But seeing long rows of Confederate soldiers marching just in front of us and across the field only to encounter Union soldiers coming up over a rise was a chilling site. It was not unusual during that war for spectators to view the battles from a distance - and that is just how real it felt on that October morning.

Looking forward to 2013 and not sure were it will take us. Back to the local and favorite events. Gas prices and weather will dictate just how far afield we venture this year. If you would like to include an event on our calendar of events please email us with the details.

Advertisers to the website always get first consideration of the events we attend so so advertise here and invite us to photograph your event.
