Allen Marsee

by Jim Cummings

Allen Marsee of Pleasureville, KY has been nominated as Re-Enactor of the Week and justly so. Allen is a team player - he does what has to be done for the benefit of his club (The Painted Stone Settlers) and the living history event he is attending.

Allen is usually the first to set up camp and is always willing to help others to set up camp as well. I know he has helped me out a number of times; and Allen is a usually the last to leave an event.

The first thing that Allen asks the organizers at a Living History event is “what can I do to help?” This is the kind of man Allen is.

Over the winter months Jack Luttrell , Gordon Garrett and myself made a VCR tape on how to become a native re-enactor entitled “The Warrior’s Path.”

Well, low and behold Allen was one of the first to purchase the tape. And after viewing the tape he must have said to himself “I can do that.” With the encouragement of White Turtle and Jack and Gordon Allen transformed into a Native at Martin’s Station.

With the re-enactment at Martin’s Station over Allen had a hard time containing his enthusiasm over his latest accomplishment. Although Allen still portrays a pioneer, he has portrayed a native three more times. In addition he is a member of the Butler’s Rangers. His nicknames vary from Alain LeRouge to General Blue Sticks among others. He has also helped in the creating of camp lore - just ask him about the Copperhead.

Allen is originally from Barbourville, Kentucky. He grew up a Navy brat and lived in California and Japan among other places before returning to Kentucky. He is an auto technician by trade and his other hobby (that led him to re-enacting) is genealogy. He has traced his Marsee family roots back to France and his Yount relatives back to the American Revolution.

Read below from an email received that nominated Allen for Re-enactor of the week:

My good friends,

A gentleman who is overlooked, but always there, a gentleman of many names, a brother known as Ethie, Alan La Rouge, Killdey, The Francias' Falcon, General Blue Sticks. The VP, a veteran of the "Camp of 200 cookies" and the "Copperhead" camp. A man who will stand by and do what needs to be done. Many personas, a real trooper, a good fellow who should be "Reenactor of the Week". Every camp that The Painted Stone Settlers go to, our friend Allen is there. So for shame for shame if my brother is not elected on shear presence alone! My brother who I am proud to call my friend.
